Word Study/Structural Analysis Program: Latin and Greek Roots: $37.00

An independent way for students to increase their vocabulary

One of the many skills necessary for independence in reading involves figuring out new words and increasing reading vocabulary. Words are made up of a number of meaningful, structural units, among which are Latin and Greek roots. A student instructed in the process of structural analysis can look for familiar, meaningful parts in unfamiliar words and derive meaning for those words. In this word study set, students discover the meaning of a root by first grouping words that contain the root, talking about the meaning of the words, and then by using some of the words in sentences.

The 20 root cards, word cards, and definition cards are printed on heavy cardstock, color-coded for each level. Lines are printed for easy cutting.

The complete program includes:

Developing Ideas Writing Booklets
(ages nine to twelve): $35.00

These compact student writing booklets are designed to help students in grades 4 through 6 develop their skills in effective essay writing--skills in planning, executing, and editing, as well as skills in using more effective vocabulary, developing topic sentences and supporting ideas, and writing opening and closing paragraphs.
The booklets are designed to use simple, familiar topics to practice these skills. Research should not be needed; rather, the students organize their own thoughts around their chosen topic, both in a "mind map" format and a traditional outline form. They then proceed to write their essays from this organization, guided by the booklet and its clues.

The Developing Ideas packet is sold only as a starter kit: 10 ready-to-use booklets are provided, along with a copy master set that allows the teacher to make more booklets as needed.
